New York Yankees home jersey worn by Yogi Berra in his capacity as a coach with the club in 1982. Berra has inscribed the jersey in black marker (grading 6/10) on the left breast "Good Luck/Yogi Berra/Do I get in free." The unusual inscription is directly related to the jersey's provenance. As explained in the accompanying COPY of a letter from Joe Garagiola to our consignor, Garagiola originally received the jersey from Berra while the two were working together at a fantasy camp (year not specified). After the camp ended, Garagiola asked Berra for the jersey and also asked Berra to sign it because Garagiola wanted to display it at a gym. That prompted Berra to add the "Do I get in free" notation. Later, Garagiola gifted to jersey to our consignor, who was a huge Yankees fan.
The white knit pinstriped jersey features the Yankees "NY" logo on the left breast and the number "8" on the reverse, both applied in navy tackle twill. A white strip tag in the collar bears Berra's name, the year, and the set number ("Berra 82 2") chain-stitched in navy. A "Wilson 44" label appears on the left front tail. The jersey is original as issued and displays light-to-moderate wear. Berra was a member of the Yankees coaching staff from 1976 to 1983 before becoming the club's manager in 1984. A three-time American League MVP, Berra's number 8 is one of twenty-two uniform numbers officially retired by the Yankees. It should be noted that Yogi Berra game-worn jerseys dating from his playing career are rare. Therefore, a coaching jersey such as this offers collectors the next best alternative to add a Berra gamer to their collection, at a fraction of the price that an example dating from his playing career would cost. Comes with PSA hologram for the signature only (Not a full LOA).
