Displayed is a circa 1950-51 Robin Roberts Philadelphia Phillies signed, game used, flannel home jersey, very possibly from the team's 1950 pennant winning season, when the team's young stars were known as "The Whiz Kids" (MEARS Final Grade: A10). The jersey was worn during the regular season. Hall of Famer Roberts, a 6'0" right-hander, pitched for the Phillies from 1948-61. Later, he was on the Baltimore Orioles (1962-65), Houston Astros (1965-66), and Chicago Cubs (1966). Roberts had a 286-245 lifetime record with a career 3.41 ERA. From 1950-55, he won at least 20 games in each season. A pitcher with fine control and excellent endurance, Roberts once pitched an amazing 28 complete games in a row. The 1950 Whiz Kids, under manager Eddie Sawyer, won the NL pennant with a 91-63-3 record, but were swept in the World Series by the New York Yankees. Roberts had a 20-11 record in '50. Some of the young Whiz Kids on the Phillies, with their age: Roberts (23): Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn, center field, (23): Stan Lopata, catcher (24); Willie "Puddin' Head" Jones, third base (24); Granny Hamner, shortstop (23); Del Ennis, right field (25). The offered jersey is white with red pinstripes. In the neck is a sewn-on tag reading "Roberts." Roberts, using a fine-tip blue marker, signed under his name tag in the neck below the aforementioned tag. His signature is big and bold, neatly scripted. Seven clear buttons run down the front. Across the chest is "Phillies" in a sewn-on wine color, with white trim. On the lower outside left tail is a sewn-on "Wilson" manufacturer's tag (loose) and a tag giving cleaning instructions. On back is "36" in sewn-on wine color numerals with white trim. There is some very slight fabric loss on the numerals. Overall, the jersey is in EXCELLENT condition. The jersey is all original. There is no size tag. The chest measurement is 24, and the torso measurement is 35. The jersey comes with a PSA LOA for the autograph. It also comes with a MEARS Letter of Opinion of the jersey, Cert. Number: 322068. The offered jersey has a MEARS FINAL GRADE: A10.
