Yogi Berra will always be associated with the New York Yankees, as the Hall of Fame catcher was a 3-time AL MVP with the Bronx Bombers, and a key part of an amazing 10 Yankees World Championships as a player. However, sometimes overlooked is that Berra was a bench coach for the Houston Astros (1986-89), and offered is a signed Yogi Berra Houston Astros uniform. Before signing with the Astros, Berra was friendly with Houston Astros owner John McMullen, a New Jersey resident, as was Berra. Before the 1986 season, McMullen wanted to give rookie manager Hal Lanier a veteran bench coach, and Berra, who had already managed the Yankees twice and the New York Mets once, fit the bill. In addition, Hal Lanier's father, Max Lanier, a former Major Leaguer, was friendly with Yogi back to their playing days, and Hal Lanier used to serve Yogi food and drinks when he would visit the Lanier home in St. Petersburg. Hal Lanier credits Yogi with being a big help when the Astros won the NL West in 1986. The offered knit jersey has "Astros" in sewn-on navy-blue script, with white trim across the chest. There is a navy-blue star, with white trim, sewn on the left chest. The pullover, short-sleeve jersey has the multi-colored, horizontal stripped look, featuring red, orange, yellow, and gold. On the left, outside tail is a Goodman & Sons manufacturer's/wash tag, showing size "44." On back is a white, sewn-on nameplate, with navy-blue sewn-on letters reading, "BERRA." Below the player's name is "8" in a navy-blue sewn-on numeral. Berra signed and inscribed the jersey on the front, scripting "Yogi Berra" and inscribing his number "8," both neatly written in blue ink from a fine-tip marker. While the included jersey is manufactured by Goodman & Sons, the knit pants are manufactured by Rawlings. The pants are a white/cream color, with a navy-blue stripe down the outside of each leg. A Rawlings manufacturer's tag on the inside back of the elastic waist reads, "Rawlings/MLB [size] 38." An adjacent tag reads, "BERRA 38 22," showing the waist size and the inseam length. Next to that on the back waist is a tag reading, "SET 1 1989." The pants have two white snap buttons down the front, and a sliver/white button on each of the rear pockets. Both the jersey and the pants have a few very small, light stains. The jersey and pants each exhibit light use, and each is in EXCELLENT condition. The offering comes with a PSA LOA for the signature.
