Displayed is a rare 1921 original New York Yankees team photo of the first-ever American League pennant won by the American League franchise. That season the Yankees went 98-55 to take the AL flag but lost the best-of-nine (5-3 in games) World Series to their "landlords," the long-established home team in New York City's Polo Grounds V. The Yankees were renting the Polo Grounds before later moving to the new Yankee Stadium. Ruth is pictured in the top row, third from the right. The Bambino batted .378 in 1921, and he led the AL with both 59 homers and 168 RBIs. Other Hall of Famers in the photo: Home Run Baker, top row in the middle, five places from each side; Waite Hoyt, middle row, third from left; manager Miller Huggins, front row center, five from each side. Some other Yankees notables: Wally Pipp, the first baseman that Lou Gehrig replaced when the Iron Horse began his then-record consecutive games streak of 2,130 on June 1, 1925. Pipp is in the top row, third from the left; Carl Mays, star pitcher, top row fourth from the left; Bob Meusel, star outfielder, top row, at far right; Roger Peckinpaugh, star shortstop, middle row, second from right. The photo exhibits some corner wear, but the image is in fantastic shape and very clear. There are Brown Brothers stamps on back. The 8x10" black & white photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC."
