Presented is a 7/24/83 set of four ticket stubs to the famous "Pine Tar Game" held at Yankee Stadium, one of the strangest games in Major League history. The Sunday afternoon contest had the visiting Kansas City Royals trailing the home team New York Yankees by 4-3 with two outs in the 9th inning. Future Hall of Famer George Brett was at bat with two outs and the Royals' U. L. Washington on first base. Brett knocked an 0-1 pitch from future Hall of Fame reliever Goose Gossage over the right field wall, to seemingly give the Royals a 5-4 lead. However, when Yanks manager Billy Martin protested that Brett had pine tine too high on the barrel of the bat, the umpires measured the pine tar as going up the bat handle 24" rather than the allowed 18", and agreed with Martin, changing their call to "out." An absolutely enraged Brett charged back onto the field in protest, but the umpires held their ground, and the game soon concluded with a final out and a 4-3 Yankee win. The Kansas City Royals protested the game, and Baseball Commissioner Lee MacPhail ruled that calling Brett out violated the spirit of the "Pine Tar Rule" (Rule 1.10 c), because the "Pine Tar Rule" was intended for economic reasons to save baseballs from being removed from play because they were marred by pine tar, and the extended length of pine tar on the bat did not give Brett any baseball advantage. So, the game was ordered replayed on August 18th from the point of Brett's home run, and the Royals held on to win 5-4. The "Pine Tar Bat" used by Brett is now exhibited in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The four offered ticket stubs all read, in part, "SUN., JULY 24, 1983/SEC 10/BOX 230C/$675.00/RAIN CHECK/DAY 52/NEW YORK YANKEES." The individual seat numbers on the stubs are "1, 2, 3, 4." Each stub measures approx. 1.5x2.75". As a whole, the stubs exhibit some minor darkening, a few slight wrinkles, and some slight surface color loss in which a small portion of the three of the stubs shows as being white. The stubs come from a man who attended the "Pine Tar Game" and the stubs are in overall good condition. The "Pine Tar Game" ticket stubs are sure to add an interesting twist to any collection and spark renewed interest in one of baseball's most bizarre games.
