Presented is a Sept. 25, 1915, Jacob Ruppert signed transfer contract showing the New York Yankees' purchase of future Major League pitcher Jimmy Ring from the Jersey City Skeeters of the International League. In '15, "Jake" Ruppert, a Hall of Fame executive, was in his first season as the co-owner of the New York Yankees. Ruppert came from a family of brewers, and his father owned a brewery in The Bronx, in New York City, one that Jake Ruppert later owned. Jacob Ruppert not only became a colonel in the National Guard - and was often called "Colonel" for the rest of his life - but he also served in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing an area of New York City. As a co-owner and later sole owner of the Yankees, Ruppert bought Babe Ruth and other Boston Red Sox stars to play for the Yankees. Then, Ruppert arranged for the building of Yankee Stadium so that the Yankees would not have to be tenants of the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds. Ruppert was the Yankee owner when the team became a perennial powerhouse. Jimmy Ring, whose contract was purchased by the Yankees, never played for the Bronx Bombers. He broke into the Majors in 1921 with the Cincinnati Reds, and over a dozen Major League seasons with the Reds, the New York Giants, and the St. Louis Cardinals, he went 118-149 with a 4.13 ERA. The two-page offered contract measures 8x14". Because of the faint typing on the document, it could be that the contract was a signed copy of the original contract. In part, the contract reads, "This agreement, made and entered into this 25th day of September 1915 by and between Jersey City Base Ball Company and American League Base Ball Club of New York....does hereby release to the party of the second part the services of player James Ring...Witnesseth: The party of the first part For and in Consideration of the sum of Three Hundred ($300.00) Dollars." The offered contract exhibits some slight darkening and minimal foxing. It has a few partial tears, particularly at the margins. Ruppert signed the contract in blue or black ink, with the color now faded, but with the signature still easily legible. The contract has been folded into fourths for mailing, and fold lines remain. The contract comes with a PSA/DNA COA, Cert. Number F70576, and the aforementioned cert. number is also on an PSA/DNA sticker affixed to the contract.
