Scarce circa 1910 baseball fan featuring the portrait images of the following sixteen Major League players: Germany Schaefer, Bobby Wallace, Billy Sullivan, Hal Chase, George Moriarty, Harry Lord, Harry Davis, Nap Lajoie, Mickey Doolan, Clark Griffith, Bill Dahlen, Bill Sweeney, Frank Chance, Art Devlin, Fred Clarke, and Roger Bresnahan. All the player portraits line the top border, with each player identified in print at the base of his respective image. The center design consists of an image of a young woman, with blank scorecards printed to the left and right of her image. An illustration of a catcher’s mitt and baseball at the base completes the attractive motif. These attractive fans were normally distributed as promotional pieces, and this example is no exception. Printing on the reverse promotes “Barton’s Barber Shop,” located on “Main Street – Mt. Pleasant – Where You Get The Best Barbering On Earth – Massage A Specialty.” Due to their fragile nature, these fans are scarce today. This is just the second example of this fan we have offered, and we have seen just a few others at auction in the past twenty-five years. The fan (10.25x14.5”; including the wooden handle), which is constructed of cardboard, displays a light crease to Schaeffer’s portrait, and a tiny crimp at the top, but is free of any tears or major creases so common to these fans. The scorecards have not been scored, but there is a very light name written in ink at the base of the woman’s portrait. Aside from those minor anomalies the fan remains in remarkable Near Mint condition, and one would be hard pressed to find a finer example.
