Displayed is a 1916 Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed, typed letter from his time as the Assistant Secretary of the United States Navy. "FDR" was America's 32nd President, serving from 1933-45. He remains the only U.S. President to have served more than two terms. A Democrat, he was a distant cousin of Republican President Teddy Roosevelt. In his first two terms as President, FDR worked to help the USA survive the Great Depression, and he was the main proponent of two New Deals, legislation that helped the unemployed and struggling farmers. In the second part of his Presidency, he led the country through most of World War II before passing away while still in office. He was behind the creation of such diverse new programs as the development of Social Security and the research that led to the creation of the Atomic Bomb. The offered letter is typed on the official letterhead of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and it is dated "December 19, 1916." The letter measures 7x9.25". It concerns the appointment of a rural postal carrier at Canandaigua, New York. The letter is addressed to "the Honorable John J. Mattison" [the Postmaster of Canandaigua, New York]. In part, the letter reads, "Will you please let me know which of the three candidates would be preferred by the patrons of the route. The Post Office Department will want to make the selection as soon as possible and they generally prefer to appoint a local man if possible. Sincerely yours, Franklin D. Roosevelt." The Roosevelt signature is in steel-tip fountain pen ink, in black ink, now faded in color but still wonderfully clear, in neat, flowing script. Inside the frame is a 3.4x4.75" black & white photograph of FDR. The backing of the frame can be opened and the photo removed if desired. Full LOAs from PSA and JSA.
