Original film negative capturing Hall of Fame shortstop Travis Jackson as a member of the New York Giants during his 1923 rookie season. Given the year, this is certainly one of the earliest images of Jackson as a member of the Giants. Jackson, who was just nineteen-years old at the time, is pictured holding a bat on his shoulder as he poses for the camera in front of the Giants dugout. To his right, a young fan beseeches him for an autograph. The name "Jackson" is written in ink along the top border of the negative. Although the negative is not dated, the Giants' uniform style shown here was worn by the club only in 1923 during Jackson's tenure with the club (1922-36). Jackson appeared in three games with the Giants in 1922, but the following season he was able to show manager John McGraw his stuff. Taking over for an injured Dave Bancroft at shortstop in late June, Jackson batted .275 in ninety-six games to help lead the Giants to their third consecutive pennant. The following season Bancroft was traded to the Braves and Jackson became the Giants starting shortstop for the next decade. The film negative (7x5") displays a small chip in the upper right corner and is otherwise in Excellent condition.
