Displayed is an extremely rare circa 1903 Nap Lajoie "double knob" bat. Hall of Fame second baseman Napoleon Lajoie played in the Major Leagues from 1896-1916: Philadelphia Phillies (1896-1900), Philadelphia Athletics (1901-02 & 1915-16), Cleveland Bronchos/Naps (1902-14). He won five batting titles, with a career best .426 for the Philadelphia Athletics in the AL in 1901. Lajoie was so amazing as a player and sometimes player-manager, that for a time the Cleveland AL franchise was nicknamed "Naps" in his honor. Lajoie, a right-handed hitter, liked to choke up on his bat, and he used a "double knobbed" bat so that he could choke up about two inches and still have a knob, the higher one, right below the pinky finger of his lower left hand, thus adding to his bat control. The offered bat has a length of 32.75" and a weight of 40.75 ounces. "LAJOIE" is etched on the barrel. The "WRIGHT & DITSON" stamp on the barrel is light. On the barrel is stamped a manufacturing date of "Dec. 29, 1903" and "Boston." The bat is uncracked, with a terrific look. It exhibits great use, with various chips, ball marks, and indentations.
