Presented is a vividly striking and yet gruesome 1938 Horrors of War insert with graphic images that truly do portray the horrors of battle. The '38 Gum Inc. Horrors of War set was originally 240 trading cards depicting mostly violent scenes in full color lithograph artwork based on historical events from the Second Chinese-Japanese War, the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, and the Spanish Civil War. As Hitler began to initiate hostilities in Europe, Gum Inc. added another 48 cards, focusing on what turned out to be the beginnings of World War II. The final 36 cards in the 288-card complete set are particularly valuable. Of those final 36 cards, three cards, depicting Germany's Adolf Hitler, are now the most valuable. The cards measure 2.5x3.125", and the backs feature detailed descriptions of the events depicted on front. Apparently, United Stated President Franklin D. Roosevelt used the Horrors of War cards, when speaking in some meetings, to demonstrate the true nature of events in Europe. The offered insert measures approx. 5.5x11.5". The insert reads, "HORRORS OF WAR/PICTURE CARD AND BUBBLE GUM/1 [Cent]. True stories of modern warfare!" The insert pulls no punches as it shows men and a woman experiencing the horror of stabbing, and bayonet use, with blood all around. The insert has a light crease and is possibly mounted, otherwise in fine condition.
