The New York Mets played at Shea Stadium from the team's third season, in 1964, until the last home game of 2008, before the Mets moved to the adjacent, new Citi Field for the 2009 season. Offered is the opportunity to possess a 2008 Shea Stadium final season game used base. Shea Stadium, located in the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park area of Queens, in New York City, was named for William Shea, one of the key figures in bringing baseball back to New York City after the departure of the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants following the '57 season. The Mets played in the first baseball game at Shea Stadium on April 17, 1964, a 4-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The stadium sat 57,332 for baseball, and 60,372 for football - the New York Jets played at Shea Stadium from 1964-85. The New York Yankees even used Shea Stadium as a home field in 1974-75, when the original Yankee Stadium was being remodeled. Memorable events at Shea Stadium included the first major outdoor concert for the Beatles in the United States, on Aug. 15, 1964; the Miracle Mets winning the World Series against the Baltimore Orioles on October 16, 1969; the Mets' amazing comeback in the penultimate game of the 1986 World Series following Bill Buckner's error, and the Mike Piazza eighth inning home run on that gave the Mets a 3-2 lead that led to a victory over the Atlanta Braves on September 21, 2001, marking the return of Major League baseball in New York City after the tragic events ten days earlier, of the September 11th attack.

The offered base measures 15x15x2" at the edges and rises to 3" in height in the center. There is also a 6" long, 1.5" square, metal ground anchor on the underside allows the base to be secured. The base is made of hard rubber coated with a white, striated synthetic material that is tough enough to withstand metal spikes. Two of the sides have a hard, plastic-like "plaque" that reads, "Shea Stadium 1964-2008." This "plaque," measuring 1x6.5", also shows two more "Mets" and has images of Shea Stadium and of a Mets logo showing the New York City skyline. Alternating places with the aforementioned "plaques" are two more "plaques," again measuring 1x6.5", in Mets colors of blue and orange, having an MLB logo, and reading, "I Live for This." The top of the base has a 6.75" diameter image of Shea Stadium, in colors of blue, orange, black, and white. Verbiage on top of the base reads, "SHEA STADIUM/1964-2008/METS." Raised lettering reads, "Original HOLLYWOOD BASE." The base comes from a former Shea Stadium groundskeeper. The base weighs 11 lbs. The offering shows nice wear, yet it remains in EXCELLENT condition. This game used, final season Shea Stadium base will bring excited attention to any sports collection.
