Collection of eleven Major League team-signed baseballs dating from the 1945 season, plus one 1944 minor-league team ball, for a total of twelve signed baseballs. Unless otherwise noted, all the balls are either Official American League (Harridge) or National League (Frick) baseballs and in Near Mint condition. All but one is housed in a vintage Spalding retail bag which in turn resides in a vintage Reach retail box. All twelve individual ball boxes are housed in a vintage Spalding twelve-count retail box. Please keep in mind that for a collection such as this, one must allow for the possibility of clubhouse signatures. The collection consists of the following:
1) New York Giants. Thirty-two black or blue-ink signatures (averaging 7/10) including Ott, Lombardi, Weintraub, Gardella, Luque (coach), Bain, Van Mungo, Kerr, Hausmann, and Voiselle. The team name, "N. Y. Giants" is printed in blue ink vertically over the sweet spot. Near Mint.
2) Detroit Tigers. Fourteen blue-ink signatures (averaging 8/10): O'Neill (Mgr., sweet spot), Miller (sweet spot), Mayo, Cullenbine, Houtteman, York, Swift, Hoover, McLaughlin, Eaton, Maier, Wilson, Webb, and Outlaw. The team name, "Detroit Tigers," is printed in blue ink on a side panel.
3) St. Louis Cardinals. Eleven blue-ink signatures (averaging 7/10): Schoendienst, Southworth (Mgr.), Gonzalez (coach), Adams, Dockins, Marion, Creel, Bartosch, Harry Brecheen, Verban, and Burkhart. The notation "St. Louis Cardinals/World Champions" is written in black in across the sweet spot. (The Cardinals were the champions in 1944 and reigning champions in 1945 when the ball was signed.) 4) Philadelphia Athletics. Fourteen blue-ink signatures (averaging 8/10), including Simmons (coach), Kell, Siebert, Rosar, Peck, and Brancato. The team name, "Phil. Athletics," is written in blue ink across the sweet spot. The stamp "U.S.N." appears on a side panel, indicating that this ball was produced for use by the United States Navy.
5) Boston Braves. Twenty-two blue-ink signatures (averaging 7/10) on an Official American Association (Troutman) ball, including Holmes, Masi, Barrett (sweet spot), Ramsey (twice), Drews, Mack, Bissonette (Mgr.), and Shacker.
6) Pittsburgh Pirates. Twenty black-ink signatures (averaging 8/10), including Frisch (Mgr.), Waner, Lopez, Russell (sweet spot), Rescigno (sweet spot), Cuccurullo, Roe, Elliott, Saltzgaver, and Coscarart. The team name, "Pittsburg Pirates," is written in black ink on a side panel. The stamp "U.S.N." appears on a side panel, indicating that this ball was produced for use by the United States Navy.
7) Brooklyn Dodgers. Twenty blue-ink signatures (averaging 7/10) on an official American Association (Troutman) ball, including Durocher (Mgr., sweet spot), Stanky, King, Gregg, Lombardi, Dressen (coach), Galan, and Bordagaray.
8) Philadelphia Phillies. Twenty-six blue-ink signatures (averaging 6.5/10), on an official American Association (Troutman) ball, including Seminick, Fitzsimmons (Mgr., on ball label), Kennedy, Raffensberger (sweet spot), Monteagudo (sweet spot), and Coffman. The team name, "Phila. Phillies," is written in black ink on a side panel. EX.
9) Boston Red Sox. Twenty-two black-ink signatures (averaging 7/10), including Cronin (Mgr., sweet spot), Metkovich, Daly (coach), Fox, Camilli, Garbark (sweet spot), Woods, Tobin, and Holm. The stamp "U.S.N." appears on a side panel, indicating that this ball was produced for use by the United States Navy.
10) Washington Senators. Twenty-seven black-ink signatures (averaging 5/10), including Ferrell, Bluege (Mgr., sweet spot), Torres (sweet spot), Kimble (sweet spot), Travis, Lewis, Judge (coach), and Kuhel. A large "W" and the year "1945" are written in black ink on the ball label. The stamp "U.S.N." appears on a side panel, indicating that this ball was produced for use by the United States Navy. 11) Washington Senators. Twenty-two blue-ink signatures (averaging 6/10) on an official American Association (Troutman) ball, including Ferrell, Bluege (Mgr., sweet spot) Altrock, Leonard, Clift, Niggeling, Evans, Kuhel, Shepard, Chipple (sweet spot), and Vaughn. EX-MT. No box.
