Presented is a full ticket (PSA FULL NM 7) to the April 15, 1948, Brooklyn Dodgers Knothole Club Welcome Home Dinner at Brooklyn's St. George Hotel. Knothole Gangs/Clubs derived their name from the vintage days of baseball when youngsters would peep into knot hole openings in wooden fences to watch baseball games for free. Various teams in the minors and majors had knothole gangs or clubs over the years, and these knothole clubs offered free or discounted tickets to youngsters. When Branch Rickey moved from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1943, he took the idea of a knothole club with him to Brooklyn. Later, from 1950-57, entertainer Happy Felton hosted a television show held before Brooklyn Dodgers home games called Happy Felton's Knothole Gang, on which three young ballplayers would compete in demonstrating baseball skills. It was customary that when the Dodgers returned to Brooklyn at the end of spring training and just before the regular season, the annual Dodger Knothole Club Dinner was hosted by the Dodger Knothole Club and all the Brooklyn players would attend as well as fans of all ages, with tickets. The 1947 season would a huge success for the Dodgers. The team featured future Hall of Famers such as Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges, and Arky Vaughn. All of the above-named Hall of Famers returned for the 1948 season. Jackie Robinson broke the Major League "color line" in '47, and batted .297, led the National League in stolen bases (29) and sacrifices (28), and was the NL Rookie of the Year. The powerful '47 Dodgers won the National League pennant and lost the World Series to the New York Yankees in seven games. The offered full ticket measures 2.25x5.5". The ticket has been creatively designed, with the background of the ticket resembling the wood of a fence. The ticket reads, in part, "Welcome Home Dinner/THURSDAY, APRIL 15, 1948/GRAND BALLROOM/St. GEORGE HOTEL/BROOKLYN, N.Y./$6.00." The full ticket has been encapsulated and PSA graded "FULL NM 7." It is the only PSA graded example, and it is high grade for a full ticket-NM 7.
