Displayed is a 1982 Rusty Staub New York Mets game used, signed, short sleeve gray jersey. Daniel "Rusty" Staub was an outfielder, first baseman and designated hitter born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1944. He played for five teams in a 23-year MLB playing career: Houston Colt .45s (1963-68), Montreal Expos (1969-71 & '79), New York Mets (1972-75 & 1981-85), Detroit Tigers (1976-79), Texas Rangers (1980). Staub had 2,716 hits, with 292 home runs and a career .279 batting average. In 1982, when this jersey was game used, Staub batted .242, with three homers and 27 RBI in 219 at bats. He is the only Major Leaguer in history to have had 500 hits for four different teams: Houston, Montreal, New York Mets, and Detroit. Later in his career, he was often a pinch hitter. While with the Montreal Expos in their first seasons as a National League expansion team, Staub made an effort to engage with the fans, speaking French on occasion. He was a top power hitter and became enormously popular. Known as Rusty, because of his orange/red hair, since he was a child, Montreal fans nicknamed the big slugger as "le Grand Orange" (the Big Orange in French). Staub said that he vividly remembered, as a child, saying the Rosary for his uncle, a police officer lost in the line of duty in New Orleans. That childhood event caused Staub to have a great lifetime bond with first responders and their families. Later, while with the Mets, Staub established the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund."
