Offered is a very rare 1890s Spalding mushroom bat with ring paint. The wooden bat is 34" long and weighs 41.5 oz. This is one of the earliest of the mushroom knob bats. In the center of the bat is a very clear Spalding center brand. To the left of the center brand in lighter, stamped block letting are the words, "THE SPALDING MUSHROOM, PATENT APP FOR." From about the middle of the bat to the end of the barrel are dark, stenciled rings. The paint that was used for the rings has a beautiful patina. The rings make the top part of the bat darker than the lower part. Overall, the bat is in very good condition. There are signs of use as there are some small dings and scuff marks on the bat. And while the bat was used, it was never abused. Mushroom bats were commonly used in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and are highly collectible.
