The World Hockey Association was the first major hockey league to challenge the NHL since the Western Hockey League competed against the NHL in 1926. Presented is a collection of ten (10) WHA hockey pucks. The WHA began on Sept. 13, 1971, and the WHA ceased operations on June 22, 1979. The WHA had 67 former NHL players in the league's initial 1971-72 season. The biggest coup for the early WHA was NHL superstar left wing Bobby Hull, of the Chicago Black Hawks, signing a $2.7 million-dollar ten-year contract, with the Winnipeg Jets. The WHA was plagued throughout its existence with financial problems. Many NHL stars jumped to the WHA: Gerry Cheevers, Bernie Parent, Ted Green, J.C. Tremblay, and Derek Sanderson. In the later years of the WHA, the great Gordie Howe came out of retirement to play alongside his two sons on the New England Whalers, and future NHL superstars such as Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier achieved their Major League start with the WHA. When the WHA ended operations, four of the league's teams were absorbed into the NHL: Edmonton Oilers, Quebec Nordiques, Winnipeg Jets, and the New England Whalers, renamed the Hartford Whalers. The offered collection: 1) A WHA "blue" puck (no specific team) - an experiment was initiated in trying blue pucks as an aid to the visibility of the puck to fans. These blue pucks are collectors items; 2&3) A pair of Edmonton Oilers pucks, one with a black and white logo and the other with the team's logo in color; 4&5) A pair of Michigan Stags pucks, one in red on a white background, and the other using red, gold, black and white coloring; 6) Los Angeles Sharks; 7) Edmonton Oilers; 8) New England Whalers; 9) Winnipeg Jets; 10) Houston Aeros. Some of the pucks exhibit good use, while other pucks show light use or no use.
