Mickey Mantle has been in the middle of many lineups, but mostly it was because he was batting third or fourth in the batting order for the New York Yankees. In the zany offering at hand, Mickey is in the middle of another kind of lineup, a police one. Offered are copies of two fun photos that show Mickey squarely in the arms of the law.

1) In this 8x9.8" black & white photo, Mickey is in spot #3 of a police lineup, with the other four spots being occupied by what appear to be police officers from New York City. The Bronx Bombers Hall of Famer stands out like a sore thumb. The only one in the photo without a collared shirt and a tie, Mantle might be at real risk of being identified as a miscreant if a witness to a crime had to actually pick out a suspect from this photo. At least two of the other four men are armed. Perhaps Mantle's broad smile will save him from being fingered as a suspect. The great Yankee center fielder looks as if he's having too much fun to be a guilty party. The copy photo exhibits a number of stains and other imperfections, but the photo still makes a fine and unusual memento for any collector.

2) Here's another police related Mantle photograph. In 1968, when these photos were taken, Mantle played his last season as a player. His damaged knees limiting his mobility, Mantle was playing first base and he struggled at the plate, batting only .237 with 18 home runs. Mickey retired after the '68 season. Was he applying for work with the police department as his post-career job? Somehow, we doubt it, but it certainly is fun to view this second photo: A 7.8x7.9" copy of a photo that shows Mantle's fingerprints. This copy of a photo shows Mantle's signature under the space marked "APPLICANT." Some of the typed responses on the card: "Last name, First name - Mantle, Mickey; Contributor and Address - Commissioner/Police Department/240 Centre Street/N.Y. N.Y. 10013; Date Fingerprints - 9-6-68; Sex -M; Race - W; HT - 72; WT - 195; Date of Birth - 10-20-31; Hair - Blnd; Eyes - Grey." Mickey's fingerprints are shown both as two hands and as separate fingers. It appears as if the original photo suffered some extensive water damage, and this is seen in the offered copy. Despite the water damage appearing in this copy of the photo, the offering still makes a really intriguing, outside-the-box Mickey Mantle remembrance that will add some laughs to brighten up any sports collection.
