Displayed is a pair of "Terrible Ted" Lindsay skates, with accompanying letter, that were game worn, circa 1964-65, by the Hall of Fame left wing. Robert Blake Theodore Lindsay played in the NHL for two teams: Detroit Red Wings (1944-45 to 1956-57 & 1964-65) and Chicago Black Hawks (1957-58 to 1959-60). He was a part of Detroit's famous "Production Line," all Hall of Famers: Lindsay at left wing; Sid Abel at center; Gordie Howe at right wing. Only 5'8" and 163 lbs., Lindsay was a fierce competitor; so fierce that his frequent kneeing and elbowing of opponents was a big factor in the NHL's developing specific penalty calls for those infractions. Lindsay was an 8-time First Team All-Star, and a key part of four Stanley Cup-winning teams with the Red Wings. He was sent to the Chicago Black Hawks, mostly as a punishment for his efforts in making preliminary tries at forming an NHL Players' Association. In his NHL career, he scored 379 goals and added 472 assists, for 851 points. In 1950, he won the Art Ross Trophy as he led the league in scoring with 78 points. During his years in the NHL, he was in the top three in goal scoring four times and in the top three in points six times. In his 1,068 games, Lindsay accrued 1,808 penalty minutes. The 1964-65 season was the likely time when these game worn skates were worn in games. In that season, Lindsay was making an NHL comeback after a four-season absence. He was 39 years old and played in 69 games, scoring a modest 28 points on 14 goals and 14 assists. There was nothing modest about his penalty minutes in his final season though, as he ran up 173 minutes of penalty time as an enforcer for his coach, Sid Abel, his former center on the famed Detroit "Production Line." In the NHL's Centennial Anniversary Season (2017) Terrible Ted was named as one of the NHL's "100 Greatest Players."
The offered Ted Lindsay game worn skates, mostly brown and black, have C.C.M., the manufacturer, imprinted on each ankle reinforcement, and on the leather below that is "SUPER Tacks." On the outside, lower, rear part of each skate is Lindsay's number "7" in white. The underside of each skate reads, "FABRIQUE AU CANADA" [MADE IN CANADA]. On the front metal under the instep of each skate is "MADE IN CANADA/10 1/2 [size]," and "FABRIQUE AU CANADA." The skates show nice use, with some minor loss of exterior color on the leather, some occasional small paint loss, a partial tear in the laces, and various abrasions. The offered skates come with a 1978 letter from the Detroit Red Wings stating, "For your planned auction, we have a used pair of hockey skates worn by Ted Lindsay." This letter is signed by Budd Lynch, who was the Red Wings Director of Public Relations. Ted Lindsay passed away in 2019. The offered skates make a wonderful remembrance of an NHL vintage immortal.
