Official American League (Johnson) ball signed in black fountain pen by thirty-one members of the 1925 Philadelphia Athletics. PSA has graded the signatures NEAR MINT 7 on average. This ball is notable because it might be the earliest known baseball featuring the signature of Jimmie Foxx, who was just 17 years old at the time. Foxx dropped out of high school during his senior year to join the Athletics for spring training in 1925. Foxx began the 1925 season with Philadelphia, but manager Connie Mack sent him to the minors for more seasoning. He returned to the club in September and never returned to the minors.
In addition to Foxx, other signers include Mack (Mgr.), Cochrane, Grove (rookie season), Dykes, Miller, Hale, Galloway, Bishop, Meeker, Thomas Shibe (owner and president), French, Thomas (coach), Lamar, Glass, Stokes, Harriss, and Bagwell. Several black-ink notations are written on the ball (in an unknown hand, including "Philadelphia Athletics," "Ft. Myers," "World Champions 1929" (obviously written at a later date), and the printed names of "Al Simmons" and "Howard Ehmke." The "Ft. Myers" notation indicates that this ball was signed during spring training of 1925, as it features the signatures of several players who did not make the club that year, including Meeker. The ball has been coated with a light layer of protective shellac and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Full LOA from PSA.
