Pair of Pittsburgh Pirates road pants worn by Hall of Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente during the 1965 season. Clemente game-worn pants are actually scarcer than his game-worn jerseys. This is the first such example we have ever offered and we cannot recall having seen more than three others at auction in the past twenty years. In addition to its rarity, these pants also offer collectors the opportunity to acquire a Roberto Clemente game-worn garment at a fraction of the cost that a jersey would command. (A 1960 Roberto Clemente game worn jersey just recently sold for $256,714 in Lelands' 2024 Winter Classic Auction.)
The gray flannel pants feature gold-and-black piping down each side and a button fly. Located in the front waistband are a "MacGregor 34" label, a wash tag, and a second MacGregor label reading "Set 2 1965." Clemente's uniform number, pant size and inseam measurement ("21 34 26") are chain-stitched in red upon a white strip tag applied on the interior rear, just below the waistband. The pants are original as issued and display heavy wear, including light staining, but are free of any tears or team repairs.
Clemente enjoyed another banner season in 1965. Appearing in all 154 games, he finished the year with a league-leading .329 batting average, 10 home runs, and 65 RBI. He also won his fifth consecutive Gold Glove Award and finished eighth in the National League MVP voting at season's end. One of the greatest all around players of his era, Clemente won four batting titles, one MVP Award, and twelve consecutive Gold Glove Awards during his eighteen-year career and is one of just thirty-three players in history to record 3,000 or more hits. Full LOA from MEARS certifying the pants as "Authentic" (MEARS does not grade pants, jackets or caps).
