Joe "the Jet" Perry was a Pro Football Hall of Fame fullback who was a member of the San Francisco 49ers' full-house backfield known as the "Million Dollar Backfield." Presented is a circa 1948-52 Joe Perry production proof photo, PSA TYPE I, that was used for his W468 Exhibit card. Perry grew up near Los Angeles and as a youth admired Jackie Robinson as a four-sport athlete at UCLA. Perry started his pro career in 1948 as a member of the Baltimore Colts of the All-American Football Conference. He led the AAFC in rushing in '49, and he moved with the Colts when they were absorbed into the NFL in 1950. Perry led the NFL in rushing yards in both '53 and '54. With John Henry Johnson and Hugh McElhenny at halfbacks and Y. A. Title at quarterback, the San Francisco 49ers had the only full-house backfield in NFL history in which all four players made the Pro Football Hall of Fame. At 6'0" and 200 lbs., Perry was small for a fullback, even back in the 1950s. In '48, he ran a 9.5-second hundred-yard dash, only 0.2 seconds off the then-world record. Perry described his running style as, "If you saw a hole, you take it. You run with instinct." The offered production proof photo measures 6.5x8.9". There is a facsimile Perry signature. The back has "Joe Perry S. F. 49ers back" in black pencil, written by an unknown hand. Also on back are editing instructions. The offering has small editing, pencil markings in both upper corners, and a tiny fold in the upper corner. Except for the aforementioned imperfections, the photo proof is in EXCELLENT condition. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC."
