Presented is a Babe Ruth signed bank check written on August 31, 1940, in the amount of fifty dollars ($50.00). The check is drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York (Broadway at 73rd Street Office). The check is written to "Cash." Machine-printed on the left margin of the check is "BABE RUTH." The inaugural Hall of Famer signed the check, using dark blue or black fountain ink, as "G H Ruth," with the G H standing for his first and middle names, George Herman. The check has been endorsed. The signature may read, "J Anthony" but that is not certain. Ruth's signature exhibits his customary big and bold script. Ruth's penmanship was developed as a naturally left-handed boy who was taught to write right-handed at his school, the St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, in Baltimore, Maryland. Despite his then-record 714 home runs and his still-record slugging (.690) and OPS (1.164) marks, and all the renown he achieved as baseball's biggest star, Ruth could not get a Major League manager's job after his retirement. He lived in New York City for the most part in his playing days. The above-mentioned Chemical Bank, on Broadway and 73rd Street in the Borough of Manhattan in New York City, was not far from Ruth's home on Riverside Drive on New York's Upper West Side. The check is in EXCELLENT condition, and it measures 3x8.2". It has been encapsulated and Ruth's signature PSA is Certified as AUTHENTIC AUTO.
