Displayed is a 1913 vintage Napoleon Lajoie photograph, by Brown Brothers. Lajoie is a Hall of Fame second baseman who played Major League baseball from 1896-1916: Philadelphia Phillies (1896-1900), Philadelphia Athletics (1901-02 & 1915-16), Cleveland Broncos/Naps (1902-14). Lajoie became so popular with Cleveland fans that from 1903-14 the team was nicknamed "Naps" in his honor. He also managed the Naps from 1905-09. Lajoie had a .338 career batting average, the second-highest in history for a second baseman. He won five batting titles and had 3,242 hits. The photo measures 3.1x4.8". On the verso, an unknown hand has written, in pencil, "Napoleon Lajoie." Also, stamped on back is, "Photograph by Brown Brothers/1482 Broadway, N.Y." The photograph has been encapsulated and PSA Certified Type II. This photo was taken in 1913, but printed around 10 years later, making it a Type II. Lajoie is truly a baseball immortal. He appears in the poem "Line-up For Yesterday" by Ogden Nash: "L is for Lajoie/Whom Clevelanders love,Napoleon himself/With glue in his glove." The photo is a fine remembrance for one of vintage baseball's early superstars.
