Displayed is a phantom 1962 World Series Yankees vs. Dodgers souvenir cup from one that was never played. The New York Yankees won the American League pennant in 1962 and had to await what turned out to be a three-game playoff to decide the National League flag. Reminiscent of the famous 1951 Bobby Thomson "Shot Heard 'Round the World" NL playoff between the Dodgers and Giants, in 1961 the NL race was won by the San Francisco Giants over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the pennant playoffs' deciding game. Although the '62 Yankees vs. Dodgers World Series never occurred, the '62 Yankees vs. San Francisco Giants World Series did occur and had a classic, nail-biting conclusion. With the Giants trailing the Yankees by a run in the 9th inning of Game 7, San Francisco had runners on second and third with two out. Giants' slugger Willie McCovey faced Yankees right-hander Ralph Terry, and McCovey lined a rocket that was caught by Yankee second baseman Bobby Richardson to make the Yankees the World Champions. The plastic cup is 5.1" tall and has a base diameter of 2.5". The cup depicts a banner reading, "1962 World Series" and a baseball image that reads, "Yankees * Dodgers." The cup has a crack of about 2.4" in the top half. The value of the cup rests in its nature as phantom memorabilia for a World Series that never happened.
