Presented is a scarce circa 1960 Danny Murtaugh single-signed Official Southern Association Model 97 MacGregor Baseball (Totten). This is the first time we have handled a single-signed Murtaugh baseball which goes to show how rare this piece truly is. Murtaugh played in the Major Leagues as a second baseman for three teams: Philadelphia Phillies (1941-43, '46), Boston Braves (1947), and Pittsburgh Pirates (1948-51). A good fielder, Murtaugh batted a lifetime .254 with eight home runs and 219 RBIs. In 1941, he led the NL in steals with 18. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and refused to play baseball while in the service. Instead, he served in combat in Germany with the 97th Infantry. After his Major League playing career, Murtaugh managed in the minor leagues, and eventually served four different tours of duty as the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, managing them for all or parts of 15 seasons between 1957 and 1976. He led the Pirates to World Series wins in both 1960 and 1971, and in both of those years, he was selected as the Sporting News Manager of the Year. Murtaugh neatly signed the offered baseball on the sweet spot, using blue ink from a ballpoint pen. Most Murtaugh autographs are considered "clubhouse" which makes this single signed offering rare. The signed ball is in excellent condition. The offering comes with a JSA LOA for the signature (Cert. Number: BB88734).
