Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera holds the all-time MLB records for games finished (952) and saves (652). Presented is a full ticket from Rivera's Yankee Stadium debut, on June 6, 1995. The Panamanian pitched for 19 Major League seasons, all with the New York Yankees (1995-2013). The 13-time All-Star was a 5-time World Champion. He was also a 5-time Rolaids Relief Award winner. He had a lifetime record of 86-60, with a career 2.21 ERA. Back on June 6, 1995, Rivera was in his rookie season, making his Yankee Stadium debut, but as a starting pitcher. Later that season, the Yankees shifted Rivera to relief pitching, and by 1997 he was the Yankees' regular closer, a spot he kept until his retirement, 16 years later. As a starter, Rivera relied mainly on a four-seam fastball. As a reliever, his main pitch became a cut fastball, a pitch that he threw at least 82% of the time in a number of seasons. Rivera explained, "It's really a four-seam fastball with pressure on the middle finger." Mariano varied the pressure on his middle finger to vary the movement of the ball. Batters generally knew what pitch was coming, but Rivera was still magnificent. "You know what's coming, but you know what's coming in a horror film too. It still gets you," explained MLB hitter Mike Sweeny of Rivera's cut offering. In fact, Rivera's Yankee Stadium debut may have been one of his less-than-successful appearances as a starter that eventually "pushed" him to the bullpen. In his Yankee Stadium debut, Rivera started and pitched five innings, giving up seven runs, all earned. He gave up a grand slam to Geronimo Berroa and a 2-run blast to Ruben Sierra in taking the loss in an 8-6 defeat to the Oakland Athletics. The offered punched ticket measures 2x5.5". It reads, in part, "Yankee Stadium/TUES JUNE 6 1995/7:35 PM/Price Includes City/St Tax." The ticket exhibits some very slight foxing but is otherwise in nice condition. The full ticket has been encapsulated and PSA graded FULL VG-EX.
