Pittsburgh Pirates road jersey worn by pitcher Cy Blanton during the 1938 season. This style jersey was worn by the club only during the two-year span from 1938 to 1939, making it one of the rarest Pirates jerseys in the hobby. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of just two surviving examples and the first we have ever offered. The gray flannel button-down jersey is lettered "Pirates" across the front in tri-colored red-white-and-blue felt. The number "46" is featured on the reverse in navy felt. Navy piping adorns the sleeve ends and collar. Both a "Spalding" label and adjacent "46" size tag are located in the collar, above which is the name "D. Blanton" chain-stitched in red. The year, "38," is chain-stitched in red in the rear, interior tail. There is evidence of a 1939 Baseball Centennial patch (worn by all Major League clubs in 1939) having been removed from the left sleeve (the stitch outline is clearly visible). That fact indicates that this jersey was worn by the club during spring training of 1939 (teams normally wore their previous year's uniforms in the spring). While the jersey might have also been worn during the regular season in 1939, we note that the Pirates' 1939 jerseys featured a zipper front instead of buttons. Aside from the removal of the patch (which was not original to the jersey in 1938), there are no other alterations. Moderate wear is displayed throughout, including light soiling. Cy Blanton enjoyed four strong seasons with the Pirates between the years 1935 and 1938. In 1935 he posted a league-leading 2.53 ERA while winning 18 games. In 1938, while wearing the offered jersey, he posted a record of 11-7 with a 3.70 ERA. He retired in 1942 with 68 career wins and a 3.55 lifetime ERA.
