Remarkable original glass plate negative capturing New York Giants pitcher Christy Mathewson at the Polo Grounds. Mathewson is pictured striking a windup pose in front of the dugout, with both hands over his head, as he gazes to the left of the camera. The name "Matty" is written along the top border. Although no year is listed, the uniform style shown here was worn by the New York Giants only in 1912, thereby conclusively dating the image. Mathewson was still at the top of his game in 1912, winning 23 games with an ERA of 2.12 to help lead the Giants to the National League pennant. The negative (5x7") displays minor emulsion loss along the borders and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Please note: the positive image seen on our website is for illustrative purposes only and does not accompany the negative; only the negative is offered in this lot.
