Displayed is a circa 1970-71 Pete Maravich Atlanta Hawks original photograph from "Pistol Pete's" NBA Rookie year. A 6'5" guard, Maravich played college basketball for his father, Louisiana State University head coach Press Maravich. It was a time before college shot clocks, before the three-point line, and before freshman eligibility. Yet Maravich, a wizard at dribbling, passing, and shooting a basketball, was able to score 3,667 points (the highest ever for men's college basketball) during his college years and average an astounding 44.2 PPG for his three-year career at LSU. Maravich went on to have a ten-year NBA career: Atlanta Hawks (1970-74), New Orleans/Utah Jazz (1974-80), and Boston Celtics (1980). Maravich retired after the 1979-80 NBA season. He was playing pick-up basketball at his church court in 1988 when he collapsed and died from an undetected heart problem. Maravich is an inductee to the James Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The offered 8x10" photo shows Maravich defending against an opponent who is bringing the ball upcourt. The opposing team and players, and the venue, are unknown. Marvich averaged 24.2 PPG and 5.4 APG during his NBA years. The photo captures two Maravich traits at that time: His floppy, long hair and his high socks, which often drooped low over his ankle. The offered photo has great clarity. The back of the photo has a "Robert Shaver/Kenmore, N.Y." photographer's stamp. The image has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as Type I AUTHENTIC.
