Presented is a 1922 Frank Roth Uniform Player's Contract from when he signed with the New York Yankees as a coach. Roth, a catcher, played six Major League seasons: Philadelphia Phillies (1903-04), St. Louis Browns (1905), Chicago White Sox (1906), Cincinnati Reds (1909-10). He was usually a backup catcher, and he batted a career .250. The offered contract specifies a salary of $2,500.00. The 8.5x11" contract has four pages. Back in the vintage days before free agency, the contract had an "Important Notice" which reads, in part, "No club shall make a contract different from the uniform contract or a contract containing a non-reserve clause...." The title page of the contract has a handwritten, by an unknown hand, "Frank Roth... coach." Roth is thought to have been the Yankees' first pitching coach, even if he did not have that specific title. Roth signed the contract, in neat script, in dark blue or black fountain ink. The contract shows the darkening that can be expected in a document over a century old. At one point, the contract was folded into thirds for mailing and the folds remain. There are also a number of tears, each approx. an inch long, on the fold lines and the contract has a few very small stains. The contract has the seal of the New York Base-Ball Club of New York. The offering presents an interesting behind-the-scenes view of the financial side of vintage baseball. The signed contract comes with a PSA LOA.
