Original Type I photograph capturing Babe Ruth amid a crowd of mourners at the funeral of his first wife, Helen, in 1929. An Associated Press credit stamp appears on the reverse. Helen died in a house fire on January 11, 1929. She and Babe Ruth were separated, but not divorced, at the time of her death. Although they were no longer living together and their marriage was an unhappy one, Ruth was emotionally shaken at the news of her death, as can be seen in his face here at the burial ceremony. The photo (8.25x7") displays a diagonal crease in the lower right corner, as well as several other light surface wrinkles. Remnants of the original paper news caption remain on the reverse.
