Displayed is a circa 1919 original Type I Underwood and Underwood photo of Babe Ruth greeting a group of young boys and perhaps presenting the boys with an award of some sort. In 1919, the Bambino was 24 years old and in his last season as a Boston Red Sox player. Ruth set a new Major League single-season home run record that year with 29 blasts. He also led the American League that year in runs (108), RBIs (113), OBP (.456), SLG (.657), OPS (1.114), and total bases (284). Still in the Red Sox starting pitching rotation at various times that season, he had a 9-5 record, with a 2.97 ERA. In 1920, Ruth was with the New York Yankees. It's unclear exactly when and where the photo was shot, but the photo is wonderfully charming, and it provides a glimpse into a time of over a century ago, with the boys in nickers and caps. The Babe shows a youthful physique, without the weight he carried in the late 1920s and '30s. Ruth is in his usual spot, "center stage", with smiles all around. The photo measures 4.6x6.25". A small part of a bottom corner has been cut off. On back, written in pencil by an unknown hand is, Babe Boston 1919. Also on back are Underwood & Underwood stamps. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA certified as Type I AUTHENTIC. Aside from the cut corner, the photo is in nice condition, and the offering displays the infectious warmth that the gregarious Ruth engendered.
