Hall of Fame center fielder Willie Mays, considered by some baseball pundits to be the greatest player of all-time, was moving into the tail end of his career in 1970, and at the same time reaching classic milestones of achievement. He broke into Major League Baseball with the 1951 New York Giants, went with the team when it moved to San Francisco for the start of the 1958 season, and came back to New York City to finish his career with the 1972-73 New York Mets. Displayed is a rare ceramic mug that was put out by American Airlines to salute Mays for his 600th home run and his 3,000th hit. It is the first one we remember handling. The mug is 5" in height, with a base diameter of 4". The mug has a color image of Mays in a San Francisco Giants cap. The printing on the mug reads, "AA salutes Willie Mays/600th Home Run - Sept.22, 1969/3000th Base Hit - July 18, 1970." There are a number of small places on the face and rim of the mug where the exterior coloring has rubbed off. The mug is EX condition with a hairline crack that in no way inhibits its display value; we just mention it for accuracy.
