Presented is a wonderfully colorful Harlem Globetrotters' 28x36" cloth banner from the Globetrotters Tour of Japan. The team began play as the Savoy Big Five in 1926 in Chicago. They played games when dances were held as a means to increase attendance. Gradually, the team of African American players became a touring group, first in Southern Illinois. Owner Abe Saperstein changed the name of the team to the Globe Trotters, and then later to the Harlem Globetrotters. The team began to add comedy to their performances. They expanded their tours to the American Midwest and eventually became a world-famous team that has played 26,000 exhibition games in 124 countries and territories. Famous Globetrotters: Goose Tatum, Meadowlark Lemon, Marques Haynes, Curly Neal, and Wilt Chamberlain. The multi-colored banner depicts a Globetrotter carrying a suitcase that has images of flags of the United States and Japan. GLOBETROTTERS is in large block gold lettering, with blue trim. This cloth banner is of the highest quality with the gold on blue lettering woven into the fabric. Near the bottom of the banner is THE MAINICHI in large, gold block lettering. The Mainichi is a newspaper in Japan that sponsored the tour. The brilliant color and graphics offer great eye-appeal. The banner is in superb condition.
