Presented is the 1974 Gaylord Perry Reading Hot Stovers Award. The Reading Hot Stovers is a sports-loving group from Reading, Pennsylvania, and the group has had an annual banquet for 62 years. Me and the Spitter is the title of Gaylord Perry's autobiography, and the Hall of Fame right-hander was constantly being accused by opposing managers and players of throwing a spitball. He seemed to play into the accusations, by touching his cap, his jersey, and his pants while on the mound, thus causing opponents to accuse him even more of using a foreign substance to "doctor" the baseball. In a 22-year Major League career, Perry played for eight teams. He had a 314-265 career record, with a 3.11 ERA. The 5-time All-Star was the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in each league. His older brother, Jim Perry, was also a Major League pitcher, and the Perry brothers are the first pair of brothers to each win at least 200 games, and the only brothers to have each won a Cy Young Award. In '74, Gaylord Perry had a 21-13 record for the Cleveland Indians. The Reading Hot Stovers Award has a 4.3x4.3" wooden base. On top of the base is a cup, of what appears to be Sterling silver, with a diameter of approx. 6.25". On the base is a metal plaque measuring 1.25x4.25". The whole award weighs approx. 24 ounces. Engraving on the plaque reads, Reading Hot Stovers Award/Gaylord Perry/Cleveland Indians/21-13/1974. The wooden base shows some very small nicks and the cup on top has some areas, especially on the inside surface of the cup, that show tarnishing. Aside from the tarnishing and the small nicks on the wood, the cup is in very good condition.
