The 1970s was the era of the Big Red Machine, when the Cincinnati Reds won four pennants and two World Series between 1970-76. Presented is a 1970s Cincinnati Reds' game worn batting helmet. Of course, a key part of the Big Red Machine was switch-hitting Pete Rose. The all-time Major League hits leader with 4,256, Rose played for Cincinnati from 1963-78 and again from 1984-86. The 17-time All-Star was a 3-time batting champion and a 3-time World Series Champion. This is a game used helmet for certain; it shows scrapes and rack marks and light pine tar under the brim. It does have a Rose's number "14" written in marker on vintage athletic tape on the back. This is not the normal way that the Reds identified their players on helmets, but we do believe that the identifier on the helmet is vintage; the Reds typically had the player's last name in Dymo tape on the backs or brims of their helmets. So, we cannot confirm use by Rose; this is merely speculation. The helmet may have been used by him in spring training or may have been someone else's helmet that was then kept as a spare for Rose. There is a leather padded band inside that is partially split in two at the back. Two ABC labels are inside; one has Rose written on it. Again, this looks vintage, but we can't confirm use by Rose. There is also an additional Pro-Celd label also inside, along with a Sotheby's lot tag from when this helmet was originally sold decades ago in the Barry Halper Collection auction. On the underside of the bill, stamped with raised lettering, is, "AMERICAN BASEBALL CAP MEDIA, PENNA."
