Presented is a 1937 Washington Redskins Worlds Champions framed panorama photo, with 23 player photos and facsimile signatures for each pictured player. In '37, the franchise was in its sixth NFL season. The team had been in Boston, Massachusetts, as the Boston Braves in 1932, and then as the Boston Redskins, from 1933-36. Although the Redskins won the East Division crown in '36, attendance was low, and owner George Preston Marshall moved the franchise to his hometown of Washington D.C. for the 1937 season. The team drafted tailback Sammy Baugh, from Texas Christian University, in the NFL's first round, and Baugh led the squad to the '37 NFL Championship. As the team's chief passer, Baugh threw for 81 completions, at the time a new NFL record. The Redskins' Cliff Battles, from West Virginia Wesleyan, led the league in rushing that year, with 874 yards. Riley Smith, a blocking back from Alabama, led the team in scoring, with 55 points, on two running touchdowns, 22 extra points, and five field goals. The squad's head coach was Ray Flaherty. The Redskins won the '37 Championship game by a 28-21 score over the Chicago Bears. The team, and the NFL, had no African American players in 1937, and owner George Preston Marshall was still the owner of the Redskins when they became the last modern NFL team to integrate, amazingly in 1962. Note the leather helmets, with no face guards. Also, only 23 players are in the photo. The NFL still played one-platoon football in 1937 and rosters had less than half the players on today's rosters. The bottom of the photo reads, Washington Redskins - 1937 World's Champions, and, Courtesy of Washington Herald Times. Pictured in the photo, left to right - (with the uniform number and name of each player in the photo): (Asst. coach) Ray Baker, (43) Ed Kahn, (25) Max Krause, (21) Les Ollson, (28) Jim Karcher, (37) Bill Young, (35) Riley Smith, (11) Ernie Pinckert, (20) Cliff Battles, (17) Turk Edwards, (15) Jim Barker, (38) Ben Smith, (19) Charlie Malone, (33) Sammy Baugh, (22) Chuck Baud, (13) Ed Justice, (39) Ed Kaval, (26) Vic Carroll, (12) Eddie Britt, (32) Bob McChesney, (40) Wayne Millner, (23) Dan Irwin, (30) Dixie Howell, (18) Ed Michaels, (Head Coach) Ray Flaherty. The photo is framed at 10.5x35.75". The wooden frame has some very small dings and some small spots where the paint has rubbed off. Overall, the photo itself is in excellent condition.
