Displayed is a 1976 Blue Moon Odom Chicago White Sox softball-style game worn away uniform. The softball-style shirt was a part of a uniform makeover for the White Sox that year. 1976 was country's Bi-Centennial, and White Sox owner Bill Veeck was always looking for colorful ways to attract publicity. Veeck devised new uniform combinations that included both short pants and softball-styled shirts. The shorts were only worn on four occasions, but the shirts were frequently used. The look featured huge collars and a Tuscan style front. Johnny Lee "Blue Moon" Odom was a right-handed pitcher in the Major Leagues from 1964-76. He was with four Major League teams, most notably for his time with the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics (1964-75). Odom finished his career with the '76 White Sox. He was a part of the Oakland Athletics' dynasty when they won the World Series three years in a row, 1972-74. Before the 1972 season, Odom was shot twice while attempting to break up a burglary at a neighbor's house. He recovered and had a 15-6 record, with a 2.50 ERA that year. Odom had an 84-85 career record, with a lifetime 3.70 ERA. On July 26, 1976, he pitched the first five innings of a combined no-hitter, with Francisco Berrios, in defeating his former Oakland team. It was Odom's last career win. The all-original blue mesh road jersey has Chicago in sewn-on white letters across the chest. ODOM is sewn on the back, in white, Tuscan letters, with 13 below, in white, Tuscan sewn-on numerals. There is a Rawlings size 44 tag in the collar. The jersey shows good use, with a light amount of dirt staining on white lettering and numbering. The game used Blue Moon Odom jersey makes a terrific remembrance of a Bill Veeck innovation.
