"Spaceman" is his nickname, a moniker bestowed upon pitcher Bill Lee because although he was born on Earth, many observers believe that his nonconformist behavior indicates that he really must have been born on a distant planet. Offered is a 1977 Bill Lee Boston Red Sox home jersey that was game worn by the individualistic left-handed pitcher. Lee actually was born in Burbank, California, in 1946, into a baseball family. His grandfather, William Lee, was an infielder who played in the Pacific Coast League for the Hollywood Stars. Lee's aunt, Annabelle Lee, was a pitcher in the famed All American Girls Baseball League. "She taught me how to pitch," said her nephew, Bill. The Spaceman was a key hurler on the USC squad that won the College World Series in 1968. Lee pitched in the Major Leagues for 14 seasons: Boston Red Sox (1969-78), Montreal Expos (1979-82). Lacking a superior fastball, Lee had to master a variety of off-speed offerings as compensation, and he did that well. He has a lifetime Major League record of 119-90, with a 3.62 ERA. Among his arsenal of pitches was his "Leephus pitch," a high lob throw that was christened a Leephus pitch as a pun on the vintage Eephus pitch, also a lob. Lee didn't throw the pitch much, but when it did, it generated lots of publicity. Lee had epic verbal battles with Red Sox manager Don Zimmer, an old-school skipper who didn't appreciate Lee's marching to the beat of a distant drummer. Amazingly, Lee continued to pitch, off and on, for years after his retirement from the Major Leagues. He played for barnstorming teams, and he pitched in 2014 for the San Rafael team in the independent North American league, throwing a complete game and becoming the oldest player in professional baseball history to pitch a complete game as well as being the oldest professional pitcher to ever earn a win. Plus, he was a designated hitter for the Ottawa team in the Canadian American League in 2018. The offered jersey has Red Sox, across the chest, in sewn-on red letters. In the collar is a McAuliffe manufacturer's tag, plus a size 44 tag. The left, outside tail has a 1977 tag with washing instructions. On back is a sewn-on 37, in red numerals. The all-original home jersey shows fine use.
