Presented is a circa 1911-16 Frank "Home Run" Baker Hillerich & Bradsby decal bat in which most of the decal is still visible. Home Run Baker hit 96 home runs in his Major League career, but since the Hall of Famer played most of his career in the dead Ball Era, his power was substantial for his time. The third baseman achieved his nickname for his exploits during the 1911 World Series when he hit two clutch home runs to lead his Philadelphia Athletics to the World Championship over the New York Giants. In that fall classic, Baker's home run against Rube Marquard gave the Athletics the go-ahead run in Game 2, and Baker's round-tripper against Christy Mathewson tied the Athletics with the Giants in Game 3. Baker played his entire Major League career in the American League: Philadelphia Athletics (1908-1914), New York Yankees (1916-19 & 1921-22). He batted .307 for his career and led the AL in home runs for four consecutive seasons, 1911-14. He was a part of the Athletics famous $100,000 infield, an enormous sum in his era, and he was a part of three Athletics World's Championships, 1911, '13, and '14. The offered bat has a large, multi-colored decal (approx. 2.5x5.5") near the end of the barrel. The decal has an image of Baker, his name, and Baker's facsimile signature, and it reads, in part, LOUISVILLE SLUGGER EXCLUSIVE. The decal is mostly extant, but there are portions that have rubbed off or are illegible. The decal and the bat both show extensive use, with ball marks, nicks, surface loss, small stains, and various scrapes. The bat is 34.8" in length, and it weighs 39.5 ounces. This is the model bat that young amateur players would buy because it had the decal of the greatest home run hitter of his time. As Christy Mathewson said,"Baker is the greatest climax (clutch) hitter in baseball."
