Displayed is a 1990 Dwight Gooden New York Mets' all original game worn road jersey. Doc Gooden achieved superstardom as a young pitcher with the Mets, and he seemed to be headed for Cooperstown before his later-admitted problems with drugs and alcohol diminished his success. In a 16-season Major League career, Gooden played for five teams: New York Mets (1984-94), New York Yankees (1996-97 & 2000), Cleveland Indians (1995-1999), Houston Astros (2000), Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2000). In 1984, Gooden's rookie season, he went 17-9 with a 2.60 ERA and led the NL with 276 strikeouts, made the All-Star team, and was the NL Rookie of the Year. He had a sensational sophomore season in '85, as he won the NL Cy Young Award in taking the league's pitching Triple Crown with a 24-4 record, a 1.53 ERA, with 268 strikeouts. Gooden later helped the Mets win the 1986 World Series. In 1990, when the offered jersey was game worn, Gooden had a 19-7 record, with a 3.83 ERA. Gooden missed the entire 1995 season because addiction problems led to his checking himself into an addiction rehabilitation facility. Because Gooden became an average Major League pitcher in the second part of his career, it can be eye-opening to review how amazing a pitcher he was in his early seasons. The jersey has NEW YORK across the chest, in blue sewn-on letters with white and orange trim. On back is GOODEN in blue sewn-on letters with white and orange trim. There is a Rawlings size 46 tag inside the front tail. Also, inside the front tail is an additional "T" tag for tapered, 1 Inch Extra Length, and a 90 3 16 strip tag for the year, set, and player number. Also, the jersey is signed in blue marker by Gooden on the back, with a notation in his hand, Game Used 1990. Beneath Gooden's name is 16 in blue, sewn-on numerals with white and orange trim. The jersey shows fine use.
