Displayed is an original Don Mattingly hand-drawn portrait on a 1994 World Series baseball by famed cartoonist Bill Gallo. Gallo was born in Manhattan, in New York City in 1922. He became a copy boy for the Daily News. During World War II, he joined the U.S. Marines and was in extended combat in the Pacific, including on Iwo Jima. After returning to civilian life, Gallo rose to the position of sports cartoonist for the Daily News. He also was a columnist for the same newspaper. His writing and cartooning of boxing led to being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He has received numerous awards for his cartoons and his writing, including winning 10 National Cartoonist Society Cartoonist Awards. One of Gallo's most famous cartoons is his 1979 Thurman Munson tribute sketch. Don Mattingly played at a Hall of Fame level for six seasons when from 1983-89 he hit over .300 each season. In that time, he batted .343 in '84 and .352 in '86. In '85, he was the AL MVP when he batted .324, with 35 homers and 145 RBIs. Unfortunately, his injured back severely impacted his play after '89, and his performance suffered. In 1994, the Yankees had an outstanding season, going 70-43 in the AL East, and Mattingly batted .304, but with merely six home runs. The season ended with a baseball strike that began on August 12th, and there was never a World Series played. Mattingly finished his career without ever appearing in a World Series game. Bill Gallo did a sketch of Mattingly, including the first baseman's prominent mustache, on the side panel of an Official 1994 World Series Ball. Gallo hand printed, in black ink, "Don Mattingly By Bill Gallo" on the ball. The Rawlings ball has a 1994 World Series logo for a World Series that was never played, and the ball is NRMT. That Bill Gallo did this striking, original ink portrait on a baseball made for a World Series that Mattingly would never experience makes the ball all the more noteworthy.
