Presented is a July 1948, International News Type I photo of Babe Ruth signing a photo for slugger Hank Greenberg, the first Jewish player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. At the time Ruth was signing the photo that is pictured in the offering, he was seriously ill with throat cancer, and he had lost substantial weight. Reportedly, Ruth was not told he had cancer, but he came to that conclusion on his own. Ruth and Greenberg had opposed each other many times in Greenberg's early years and Ruth's final seasons. Ruth played from 1914-35. Greenberg's career (1930, 1935-41, 1945-47) was interrupted by 47 months of military service, most of it during World War II. Greenberg played his entire career with the Detroit Tigers, except for his final season, with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Greenberg had a lifetime batting average of .313, with 331 homers. His home run total would have been much higher if not for his time in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Air Forces. Greenberg was 2-time World Champion and a 2-time AL MVP. In 1938, Greenberg made a serious run at Ruth's single-season home run record of 60 as Hammerin' Hank had 58. Ruth threw left-handed, but he wrote right-handed and had beautiful script. The displayed photo measures 6.6x8.4". The margins have editing instructions. On back is "Caption #11," written in pencil by an unknown hand. Also, on back is a caption, typed and most likely added in more recent times, reading, "A few weeks before he died of throat cancer, BABE RUTH was visited by the great Detroit slugger Hank Greenberg. July 1948." (Babe Ruth passed away on August 16, 1948.) The photo back also has an International News stamp. The offered photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as TYPE I AUTHENTIC.
