Original Type I photograph capturing Lou Gehrig on May 2, 1939, the day he ended his then-record streak of having played in 2,130 consecutive games. The photo captures Gehrig as he sits alone on the steps of the dugout while watching the players warm up prior to the game against the Detroit Tigers at Briggs Stadium. This is an iconic image and one that was later featured on the cover of the August 1939 issue of Baseball Magazine, as well as countless other books and publications over the years. Despite its familiarity, Type I examples are rare. This is the first example we have ever offered and one of just a few we have seen. An International News Photo credit stamp appears on the reverse, along with several date stamps (the earliest is May 5 1939), editorial markings, and two New York Yankees Public Relations credit stamps. The photo (6.5x8.5") displays a heavy diagonal crease in the upper right corner, light-to-moderate creasing throughout, and heavy editorial shading and markings on the front (indicative of how many different times this photo was used for print purposes). Encapsulated as Type I Authentic by PSA.
