Displayed is a 1919 Official Players Souvenir Book of the Cincinnati Reds. This offering is essentially an early version of what later became known as a yearbook. The 4.4x7" book has 48 pages, with a page devoted to each of the 23 players, plus manager Pat Moran. Each of these pages features a black & white photo of the player or manager dressed in a tie and jacket, with each player's face colorized. Each player also rates a short bio. The page opposite each player page is an advertisement, and these "time capsule" advertisements provide fascinating looks at commerce from over a century ago. The last page in the book consists of the Reds' facsimile autographs. One of the more famous 1919 Reds was Hall of Famer center fielder Edd Roush, who won two NL batting titles while hitting .323 lifetime. Other key players on the 1919 Reds were third baseman Heinie Groh and outfielder Earle "Greasy" Neale, who also played pro football and became a very famous college football coach. The 1919 Cincinnati Reds won the World Series over the Chicago White Sox, who had eight players involved with gamblers who fixed the Series so that Cincinnati would win. The book shows wear commensurate with its over a century of age. The top part of the cover is loose, having come free from a staple. The front and back covers have numerous small stains, and the first page with a picture and bio, that of manager Pat Moran, has a number of stains and a significant paper tear. Some of the pages in the second half of the book have stains. and the corners of some pages have folds. The aforementioned wear and tear do not diminish the fascination of the book, with its detailed coverage of the '19 Reds and the charming advertisements of the time.
