Batting glove worn by Pete Rose while tying Ty Cobb's all-time hit record in 1985. This red-and-white Mizuno batting glove originates directly from Pete Rose, who has attested to its provenance by inscribing it in blue marker on the palm, "Pete Rose/9-8-85/4191" (grading 8/10). Rose's historic record-tying 4,191st career hit took place in a game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on September 8, 1985. Rose, who had already singled in his first at bat, came to the plate with one out and no one on in the top of the fifth inning for his third plate appearance. Facing Cubs starter Reggie Patterson, Rose promptly drilled a line-drive single to right field to tie the record and then enjoyed a minute-long standing ovation from the crowd. The glove displays heavy wear consistent with game use, including soiling and pine tar residue. While an exact photo match for batting gloves is probably not possible, the YouTube video of Rose's record-tying 4,191st hit clearly shows him wearing this exact style glove, and the soiling appears to be consistent with Rose's left-handed glove seen in the video. Full LOA from PSA (for the Rose signature and inscription).
