Presented is a "phantom" 1946 Brooklyn Dodgers' World Series press pin. The press pin was made in anticipation of the Dodgers being in the World Series that year, and hosting games at Ebbets Field, but that never happened because the St. Louis Cardinals edged out Brooklyn by two games, and then St. Louis went on to win the World Series against the Boston Red Sox. Under Hall of Fame manager Leo Durocher, Brooklyn had a good team in '46, with a regular season record of 96-60-1. Hall of Fame shortstop Pee Wee Reese batted .284, and outfielder Dixie Walker hit .319, with 116 RBIs. Starting righthander Kirby Higbe went 17-8, with a 3.03 ERA. However, the Cardinals, with Hall of Famer Stan Musial batting .365 and knocking in 103 runs and Hall of Famer Enos Slaughter hitting .300, with 130 RBIs, won the pennant. Thus, with the Dodgers not in the '46 World Series, this press pin is scarce. Ironically, Jackie Robinson spent the entire 1946 season in the Brooklyn farm system at Triple-A Montreal, leading the International League in batting at .365, and adding 40 stolen bases. If not for the widespread racial prejudice against Robinson, even from some players on the Brooklyn Dodgers, Robinson could have been brought up to the Dodgers in September and made a difference, but Dodgers part-owner Branch Rickey felt that he had to avoid provoking animosity against Robinson and that Jackie would have to wait until 1947 to break the Major League color line. The circular pin has a diameter of 0.8". It is designed as a baseball, with laces. It reads, 1946 BROOKLYN DODGERS WORLD SERIES PRESS. It comes complete with a threaded post and a fastener. A Dieges & Clust stamp is on the back. The press pin is in NRMT condition.
