One-page handwritten letter, dated "Springfield, Ill. May 31, 1860," signed by in black fountain pen by Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States. PSA has certified the text as being in the hand of Lincoln, and has graded the Lincoln signature GEM MINT 10. In his letter, written to James E. Harvey, Esq., Lincoln thanks him for his previous correspondence and looks forward to future letters. In full: "My Dear Sir, Yours of the 27th and also a former one have been received. While in my present position, I must not write at length. I thank you for the letters; and shall be especially obliged if you were to keep me advised of what is pending. Yours Truly, A. Lincoln." Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed to Harvey in Lincoln's hand, that is postmarked "Springfield, ILL, June 10, 1860."

This letter dates just two weeks after Lincoln won the Republican nomination for President at the Republican National Convention in Chicago. James E. Harvey was the editor of the "North American and United States Gazette," a Philadelphia newspaper, and a correspondent of the New York "Tribune." He was a frequent correspondent with Lincoln during this time period and kept Lincoln informed about politics in Pennsylvania, as well as offering him general political advice. After he was elected President, Lincoln appointed Harvey as Minister to Portugal.

The letter (5x4.25"; visible dimensions) displays a horizontal mailing fold and is in apparent Excellent to Mint condition. The envelope (5.5x3") is in apparent Very Good condition (the envelope is mounted to a backing, possibly by means of an adhesive). Both pieces are matted and framed together with a large photographic print of Lincoln. Total dimensions: 18x13.25". Full LOA from PSA.
