Arguably one of the finest seasons in all of baseball history, Ted Williams won his first-ever American League Triple Crown in 1942 with 36 home runs, 137 RBI, and a .356 batting average. From that memorable season comes this remarkable 1942 Ted Williams photo-matched Boston Red Sox game worn jersey. Sourcing from the family who has been in possession of this gem since 1942, this jersey was gifted by Ted Williams to an avid female fan who was a permanent fixture at Fenway Park famously sitting behind the Red Sox dugout for all home games. Obviously treasured by the enthusiastic young fan, this jersey is near-perfect, with the only alteration being that it was shortened at the bottom by roughly 10 inches to better fit the young Red Sox fanatic. Beautiful jersey is in the classic Red Sox style with red binding and is simply decorated with "RED SOX" across the front, the sought-after "Health" patch on the left sleeve, and the famous number "9" on the back; all in red on blue felt. The collar is complete with all manufacturers tagging including a "Spalding" patch, "Tim McAuliffe" patch, size "44" flag, and the beautiful "Ted Williams" chain stitched ID tag below. All buttons are original and the sleeves are custom shortened; a Ted Williams trademark. The year was most likely sewn into the tail but is missing due to the jersey's alteration all those years ago. We do know this jersey is from 1942 however as it is the only year that Williams wore a jersey with the Health patch on the left sleeve. Jersey shows fine use with no holes or tears. Photo-matched to an image from August 18, 1942, of Ted Williams with Joe DiMaggio. On this date, the Red Sox played the Yankees and Ted Williams recorded career hits #701 & 702 along with his 485th career RBI. Soon after this game, one remembers, Ted Williams enlisted in the Navy and spent the next three years serving his country during World War II as a pilot instructor. Hobby fresh example is the only known Ted Williams jersey from 1942, has never been offered for sale and was recently debuted on The Antiques Roadshow. Comes with MEARS and Resolution LOA.
